What are the benefits of practicing yoga?

Practicing yoga can expand the quality of your mind body connection and awareness. A regular yoga practice may improve your overall health and wellness while increasing strength and flexibility. Students could also see reduced levels of stress and a better capacity to breathe, which can enhance relaxation.

 

What is typical yoga studio etiquette?

Yoga studios are typically peaceful, sacred spaces where students can unwind and center. Be sure to check in at the front desk and take your shoes off before entering the studio. If you come to a class late, please come in after the class has finished meditation or OM-ed. Above all; be respectful and mindful of what’s going on around you.

I'm new to yoga, what class should I take?

The most important thing you need to know about a yoga class at Purple Blossom Yoga Studio is that you are welcome just as you are. As a rule, yoga is a practice that is both inclusive and inviting, and this is certainly the case at your Greenville studio. As you enter your first class, expect classmates to say hello and expect your instructor to welcome you with open arms.

This positive attitude should relieve some of the anxiety around your first Greenville yoga class, but as the class progresses there are a few things you can do to return the courtesy and help to encourage the same positive atmosphere:

  • Leave your cell phone in the lobby with your belongings. Please turn your phone off or on silent. Yoga is a serene and spiritual practice. Don't bring the outside world in with you. Give others in your class the chance at relaxation and meditation they are seeking. We understand that life happens, if you need to have your phone handy please ask your instructor for a washcloth to place your phone on so the vibrate will not distract the other students. 

  • Wear something comfortable and appropriate. Men must wear a t-shirt. Classical Vinyasa yoga often encourages more loose fitting and comfortable clothing. Wear something that you can move and bend in freely and that won't make a lot of noise as you shift from one pose to another.

  • No chatting. Please be considerate of fellow students around you.  In addition to being a form of fitness it is a method of stress management. Give others in the class the chance to relax and engage in meditation during the course.

Let your Purple Blossom Yoga Studio instructor know that this is your first class. If you are comfortable your teacher, invite them to correct your poses as needed during the class. If you are still nervous, go ahead and take a spot in the back of the class. As your instructor announces the next pose, pause half a second and wait for others to enter it. You can always follow the lead of more advanced members of the class until you feel more confident.

If at any point you are feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to yourself and enter a simple pose, like child's pose. This will give you a chance to relax your muscles and reset your mind so you can start again and enjoy the spiritual and physical benefits of the practice.

 

What clothing should I wear to yoga?

Yoga involves movement of the body, so wear clothing that you are comfortable moving around in. Typical yoga clothing is stretchy and somewhat form fitting as forward bends and twists may cause the garment to shift. Consider the temperature of the class and the amount of movement it will include.

 

What do I need to bring to class?

Yoga students usually bring a mat, water, and a towel to class with them. Our studio provides props that can be beneficial during class, as well as mats that are available for $2. We also sell stainless steel water bottle for $38 if you need to rehydrate, there is a water jug in the lobby for all to use.

 

I'm not flexible; can I do yoga?

Yoga is for everyone! Young and old, we can all benefit from practicing yoga. The more you practice, the more you will gain the flexibility and the knowledge to modify your practice to fit your own abilities.

 

Will yoga help me lose weight?

With a regular practice, yoga may help with losing weight by becoming increasingly mindful and aware of your own body when practicing meditation and asana (yoga postures or poses). Though weight loss is very complex, yoga has the power to transform.

 

If I have injuries, can I still take yoga classes?

People often come to yoga because of injuries though not all classes may be beneficial while healing. Be sure to check in with your doctor or healthcare provider before starting a yoga practice with an injury. It would be a good idea to also let your teacher know the area and extent of your injury so they can best offer specific modifications and options.

 

Can I do yoga if I'm pregnant?

Practicing yoga while you’re pregnant can be a wonderful, nurturing experience but make sure to check in with your doctor or healthcare provider before starting your yoga practice. While we do not offer pre/postnatal yoga specifically, our teachers are able to make modifications and provide a range of options to try. Learning breath work is a nice skill to have when you go into labor. Keep in mind twisting and inversions should be avoided while practicing yoga while pregnant. Make sure to let your instructor know how far along you are and if you have any adverse reactions or symptoms.  Please check with your doctor first to be safe. We invite you to come to a Gentle yoga class or the Meditation class. 

 

Should I eat before yoga class?

Yoga is typically practiced on an empty stomach so try eating about two hours in advance. If time is tight and you feel like you need to eat a little something: fruits like bananas or apples, nuts such as almonds, or an energy/granola bar are great options.

Do I need my own yoga mat?

You will need a yoga mat for your practice, at the studio we offer B Yoga mats for all students to rent for $2 per use. For sanitary reasons we have our front desk staff throughly clean each mat with a special cleaner for B Yoga mats. Many students find the type of yoga mat that fits their body and where they are in their practice over time whether they we thin, thick, sticky or textured. Our retail desk does offer Liforme Yoga mats as well as the B Yoga mats.

What is the age limit for class?

Children ages 9 to 12 are welcome to join in any unheated mat yoga class with their parent at the regular rate. Children 13 and up are welcome to take any class at the regular rate with their parents consent.
